Walking around different neighborhoods, in my city and other cities I’ve visited, I’ve notice house numbers.
Even in a homogenous suburb, house numbers seem to express the personality of the people who live behind the gate, door, wall, facade. I’ll see faded gold leaf Gothic on transoms, bold modern steel Helvetica against stucco, exuberant DayGlo numbers on plain doors and institutional brass and black appliques on brick.
In the city, even more personality is expressed.
Why?
Is it a rebellion against the conformity that consumer culture forces us into? Or the artistic expression of each homeowner?
